Human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, tells grads to be courageous
(10 May 2018) AMAL CLOONEY URGES GRADS TO BE COURAGEOUS
Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney urged young students at Vanderbilt University to have courage because it inspires others and creates rights for future generations, using examples of some of the clients she has worked with around the world.
Clooney spoke Thursday (10 MAY 2018) in Nashville, Tennessee, for senior day, a part of the university's commencement activities, and was given the Nichols-Chancellor's Medal. Silencing Critics of Israel: Biden Pulls Nomination of Human Rights Lawyer For Decrying Apartheid
Last Friday, the State Department announced the nomination of James Cavallaro, a widely respected human rights attorney, to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. But earlier this week, the State Department withdrew Cavallaro’s nomination after reports emerged that he had described Israel as an apartheid state and had criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’s close ties to AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Defending the withdrawal of Cavallaro’s nomination, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said, “His statements clearly do not reflect U.S. policy. They are not a reflection of what we believe, and they are inappropriate to say the least.” The decision has sparked outrage within the human rights community. When youth sue to protect the planet and their health: A new legal strategy to fight climate change
Last summer, 16 young plaintiffs won a pioneering lawsuit against the state of Montana. Their claim: By failing to consider the climate impact of fossil fuel projects, the state had violated children’s rights to a clean and healthful environment. The lawsuit is represented and supported by the public interest, nonprofit law firm Our Children’s Trust, which has filed a similar case in Hawaii, as well as federal lawsuits. Our panelists, including Julia Olson, Executive Director and Chief Legal Counsel at Our Children’s Trust, will discuss the novel legal strategy and share insights on new tactics for protecting the planet and our collective health and wellbeing from climate change, drawing on examples from the U.S. and Latin America.

Clooney admitted that she had never been to Tennessee before, but said her husband, actor George Clooney, told her the university had a good basketball team.
She noted that students at Vanderbilt who staged sit-ins during the Civil Rights era showed their courage to fight for equal rights. But she said courage is still needed to address conditions for women, journalists and LGBT people worldwide.

Cavallaro joins us to explain that this move by the Biden administration is particularly troubling because the role he was nominated for does not have any authority over U.S.-Israel relations and is an independent position.
